Im Oktober 2021 wurden das „Water Centre“, zudem ein Tief-Brunnen, ein Wassertank, eineunterirdischer Regenwasser-Zisterne und ein Wasser Kiosk mit Wasser-Filteranlage und auch neue Toiletten für die Jungen gehören, bis auf kleinere Restarbeiten fertiggestellt.

Dieses Projekt wurde in der Regie der Rotary Klubs Kyotera vor Ort mit dem Rotary Club Dänischer Wohld in Deutschland organisiert. Das zugrundeliegende WASH-Konzept wurde von unserem  Uganda-Projektteam in Hamburg entwickelt, das die Rotary Klubs auch bei der Umsetzung unterstützt hat.

Nun warten alle Beteiligte auf die „Opening Ceremony“, wie bei dem Projekt für die Mädchen-Toiletten. Leider wird eine Einweihungsfeier ohne die Schüler:innen ziemlich trostlos. Wegen der COVID-19 Pandemie sind die Schulen in Uganda seit März 2020 geschlossen. Aufgrund steigender Infektionsraten seit Mitte 2021 wird mit einer Wiederöffnung erst Anfang 2022 gerechnet - vorausgesetzt alle älteren Schüler:innen und die Lehrkräfte sind geimpft. So hoffen alle, dass der Unterricht im Januar 2022 wieder aufgenommen wird, dann mit sauberen, funktionierenden Sanitäranlagen und einer sicheren Wasserversorgung.

In Abstimmung mit der Schule werden derzeit die notwendigen Maßnahmen zum nachhaltigen und sicheren Betrieb der installierten Infrastruktur geplant, wie die Einzäunung vom Water Centre (Sicherung gegen Vandalismus und Diebstahl), ein zusätzlicher Wassertank als Backup (der gleichzeitig als Löschwasser-Vorrat zur Brandbekämpfung dient), Gerätschaften zur Brandbekämpfung und eine Solar-Anlage zur Stromversorgung (Bedarf bei Ausfall des öffentlichen Stromnetzes).

Water Centre completed

In October 2021, the "Water Centre" consisting of a deep well, water tank, underground rainwater cistern and water kiosk with water filtration system as well as new toilets for the boys were completed except for some minor remaining work.

This project was organized locally by the Rotary Club of Kyotera, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Danish Wohld in Germany. Our Uganda project team in Hamburg, which also supported the Rotary Clubs during the implementation, developed the underlying WASH concept.

Now, everyone involved in that project is waiting for the "Opening Ceremony", as with the project for the girls' toilets. However, an opening ceremony without the students will be rather bleak. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in Uganda have been closed since March 2020. Due to rising infection rates since mid-2021, reopening is not expected until early 2022 – under the circumstances that all older students and teachers will be vaccinated. Thus, everyone hopes that in January 2022 the school will be able to resume classes, with clean, functioning sanitary facilities and a safe water supply.

In collaboration with the school, necessary measures are currently being planned for the sustainable and safe operation of the installed infrastructure, such as: fencing around the Water Centre (protection against vandalism and theft), an additional water tank as a backup (at the same time a supply of extinguishing water for firefighting), firefighting equipment and a solar power system to provide electricity in case of a failure of the public power grid.
